Before Instagram. Before selfies. Before social media.
America’s founders used portraits to shape their image, build trust, inspire a new nation, and influence others.
In this hands-on parent & child workshop, we’ll explore how artists of the Revolutionary era used portraits as storytelling tools—full of hidden meanings, symbols, and personality.
We’ll begin as Portrait Detectives, examining famous portraits of George Washington and other early Americans to uncover hidden clues and secret symbols artists embedded in their work.
Then it’s your turn. We’ll follow along as I guide you through a simple technique for drawing the human face, then you’ll be set free to make it your own.
Using artist-level gel crayons (similar to oil pastels but less messy), you and your child will create your own symbolic portrait filled with meaning. You’ll hide at least five personal clues inside your artwork—your hobbies, dreams, favorite places, family, pets, or future goals—and see if your family can decode them.

. LET THE MUSIC MOVE YOU.
A Watercolor painting experience
Step away from the everyday and into a creative journey that nourishes the soul. In this 1 ½ hours adult class, we'll explore the life and ideas of Wassily Kandinsky, the artist who believed that color, shape, and sound could speak the language of the soul.
You'll learn a little about art history, abstract expressionism, and how Kandinsky "painted the music." Then, with inspiring classical music playing, you'll create your own original abstract painting-guided by feeling, not perfection.
Watercolor and ink. No drawing skills required. This is a relaxed, process-focused experience—not a technical class. No pressure, no rules—just you, the music, and your creativity.
