The Symbolic American Portrait

A parent–child oil pastel workshop exploring Revolutionary-era American portraiture and symbolism. Families learn how early American artists expressed identity, values, and the ideals of a new nation through clothing, posture, and symbolic objects. Students will practice a portrait drawing method and artist-level techniques to capture facial features and expression. Then, they are free to create their own American-style portrait — of themselves, a friend, or family member — including at least 5 symbols in the background that tell a story about who they are, some of which can be hidden for a playful, creative twist.

Workshops have limited space. Once full, participants may join a waiting list.
